Hi folks: We are very excited this year…… Thanks to your interest and the interest in the sport of curling in part due to the Olympics over recent years The Petersham Lions Club Curling Tournament has expanded to a sixteen team format. If this increased interest continues and we field sixteen teams, the tourney will again be modified slightly to accommodate the numbers. One of our main concerns continues to be to ensure everyone gets enough ice time while trying to hold down the “off ice-down time” between games. Again, because of the increased interest throughout the country, one major concern we have again this year is that now the Petersham Curling Club has a Sunday Night League. Therefore we must be off the ice no later than 5pm to allow them to groom the ice for their league play. With the approval of the Petersham Curling Club Administration the following format will be in place this year.
The Instructional/Warm-up time will be from 9am. New curlers should arrive at the Petersham Curling club in time to begin that instruction. There will be a brief overview beginning at 9 and they will take the ice at 9:15 for instruction on sheet one and sheet two. New curlers training will continue until 10:00. At 10:00, new instruction may continue but will move to sheet one only to allow 25 minutes (10:00-10:25) on sheet two for previous curlers to warm up. The tournament will begin at 10:30. Note:
The first two matches will begin at 10:30. All matches following the first two matches will be listed with ESTIMATED START TIMES. If you are an experienced curler and have a later match, and do not elect to participate in the warm-up you may delay your arrive at the Curling Club, but please be at the club and ready to take the ice at least 45 minutes prior to the start of your first scheduled match. First round matches will be established by random drawing and estimated start times will be published for your convenience.
With the larger number of teams, each match will be two (2) ends. The Championship match (time permitting) will be three (3) ends. Each team will be guaranteed at least two matches. When a team loses its first match during the first round of play, they should remain at the club. That team will move to another bracket and have an opportunity to play in a second match later in the day. From time to time, there will be a short break between matches to allow the curling club members to refresh and prep the ice. This time will be minimal.
Scoring and Scoreboard: The team with a stone in the house (target) and closer to the center of the house (the bulls-eye) than the opponent’s best stone will score a point for that end. If the scoring team has more than one stone closer to the center of the house than the opponent’s best stone, then all the stones closer to the center score. Each scoring stone counts one point, no matter where they lay in the house. The score board is a row of permanent numbers across the middle of the scoreboard which represents the score. The upper and lower rows on the scoreboard will represent each teams. If the Red team scores 2 points in the first end, then a 1 is placed on the Red Teams row above the 2 on the score line. This signifies that red scored 2 in the first end. A number for each end is hung up at the completion of the end for the scoring team showing the cumulative score of that team. The team with the highest score after two ends will win and move on in the tournament.
Tie match: Very important to understand this: In the case of a tie match at the end of two ends, there will be a shoot-out. Shoot-out procedures will be as follows: One selected member from each team will throw one (1) stone. The stone must cross the “Hog Line,” stay in play, and not touch the back board to qualify. The first team’s stone will be marked or measured to the center of the house as appropriate then removed from the ice. Then the second team’s stone will be thrown. The team with a qualifying stone that is closest to the center of the house (does not need to be in the house) wins the match.
Heavy Stones: If someone throws a heavy stone, that is a stone which is going far to fast, will be well past the house and hit the back board on the lane, the Curling Club request that you stop the stone and not let it strike the end-board. That end-board is not solid and a stone striking the end-board with any force may damage the lane/ice. It is also critical that any stone which may hit the hack (rubber block that you use to push off from) is stopped before the stone hits. If a stone hits the hack and the hack is knocked out of the ice, play will be ended on that sheet.
Team Composition: Teams are composed of four curlers and is authorized to have one alternate curler. The alternate curler (5th curler) may enter the match at the beginning of any end. If a curler is replaced by the alternate, the original curler may not reenter the match. If a player is missing at the start of the match, the team may proceed with three players. If a team decides to play with only three (3) curlers, the first two players will each throw 3 stones. The skip will throw the remaining two. A team may not continue with fewer than three curlers.
To expedite the pregame process, a placard indicating the current teams on the ice for each sheet and the “on-deck” teams for each sheet will be posted near the respective door for that lane. The coin toss for the on-deck teams will take place while the current game is being played. The winner of the toss gets the option of throwing first or last on the first end, the loser of the toss has the option of red or yellow stones.
Administration Stuff: The Petersham Curling Club will ask each person who intends to go onto the ice to fill out and sign a waiver prior to going onto the ice. Curlers under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian sign the waiver. Please ensure each member of your team does this upon arrival. An electronic copy of the Petersham Curling Club waiver will be sent to each team prior to the tourney by e-mail attachment. If you would like (although not required) you may download that form, make copies, and have your team members sign the form prior to arriving at the club. However, copies will be available at the club on Sunday. Due to the number of people we anticipate in the club on tournament day, we ask that curlers utilize, as much as possible, the men’s and woman’s locker rooms (far end of the club, down stairs) to store extra gear, coats etc. There may be a few empty lockers, but even if there isn’t an empty locker, we still ask you to try to leave extra shoes, clothing etc. in the locker room rather in the main club area. Shoes: There are formal curling shoes; however we don’t expect you to have those. Therefore, for this tournament, the Petersham Curling Club requests that you BRING sneaker or similar type shoes with clean soles to wear on the ice. They should not have grease, sand, grit of any kind. Please do not wear your curling shoes until you are in the club and ready to go onto the ice. Tracking foreign matter onto the ice will affect play. Street shoes will not be allowed on the ice. Clothing: You will want a light wind breaker and/or sweater to wear while on the ice. We recommend layers rather than a heavy coat or jacket. Hats and gloves will also be in order….. the temperature is below freezing on the ice. Lunch will be served between 11:30am-3pm. As part of your entry fee, you will receive your team’s lunch tickets when you arrive. You may eat anytime you are not on the ice. Additional lunch tickets will be available at $10.00 each for folks who may accompany your team for that day. Please make additional lunch reservations by phone or e-mail no later than the Wednesday, prior to the match to ensure we will have enough food. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and punch along with munchies will be available throughout the day. The Curling Club will host a cash bar throughout the tournament; the bar, however may not be open until 12noon due to local laws. It will be a long day for some. It is estimated that the championship game will begin approximately 4:00pm. Between games down time may also be lengthy. Off ice activities----- individual challenges ---------- such as foose ball, darts, cribbage or other cards games, etc. will be available. You may have something else you would like to bring to help pass off-ice time. (If you are a dart thrower, and would like to bring your own darts, please do so) If you leave the Curling Club during your off ice time, please plan on being back at least 45 minutes prior to your next game’s expected start time (remember to change your shoes before leaving). Expected start times will be updated on the master schedule board as the tournament proceeds. |
